bees wax & magic - sleepy balm

Jess finds it hard to sleep and switch off, we've tried yoga and meditating but she's a busy bee who finds it very hard to stop buzzing. So today we made sleepy balm.

Lavender and chamomile flowers steeped in sweet almond oil and thickened with beeswax with added lavender essential oil.

Sleepy Balm

Over a low heat, heat 125ml of sweet almond oil and a 60ml scoop of dried lavender and chamomile flowers together. Let this steep for 20 minutes gently - stay close by don't leave it!

Meanwhile grate 10gms of beeswax (if you don't have it in granule form.) Put the beeswax into a saucepan. (keep a special pan and wooden spoon for beeswax and herb concoctions.)

Line a sieve with filter paper and strain the herb oil into the saucepan so it pours onto the beeswax.  Stir until the beeswax melts. Add the contents of one evening primrose oil capsule and 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Pour into a screw top jar and leave to cool. Use on pulse points when you find it hard to nod off...

  2. Oh thanks so much for this! I often have trouble getting off to sleep after a busy shift at work so I will definitely have a go at making this.

    1. I think if I made it again I'd use Chamomile essential oil but it is really expensive. Good luck with it!

  4. Such a nice idea to make your own balm. Does it work? That first photo of the little bottles on the windowsill is beautiful.

  6. That sounds like heaven. I am very sensitive to powerful scents and have been very disappointed with some products that are supposed to be soothing-but this sounds about perfect.

    1. Araignee, I think I would add more Chamomile essential oil when I make it again - it's just affording it! It doesn't smell sickly sweet like some lavender balms out there but the beauty of making you own is that you can make it just how you like it!

  7. I love the idea of making my own balms like this but I find it all a little intimidating. Do you do it often? I suppose you have to invest in a few bits and bobs before you can start. Anyway, you have inspired me! X
